How fast can I get a trip permit?

Most state DOT online permit systems issue single-trip permits within 30 minutes during business hours, often instantly for routine routes and weights. Complex routes (oversize/overweight requiring engineering review or route survey) can take 24-72 hours. After-hours or weekend permits are typically available in only a few states.

Routine permits are usually instant. Standard single-trip overweight permits up to 100,000 lbs gross or oversize permits up to 12 feet wide and 13.6 feet tall typically clear automated state DOT review and issue within 5-30 minutes during business hours.

Complex permits take longer. Loads requiring bridge analysis, route surveys, or special equipment (multi-axle dollies, oversized trailers) get queued for engineering review at the state DOT. Turnaround is typically 24-72 business hours; for unusually complex moves (loads over 200,000 lbs, multi-state superloads) the timeline can stretch to 1-2 weeks.

After-hours permits are limited. Most state DOTs operate permit systems 8am-5pm local time, Monday through Friday. A handful of states (Texas, Florida, North Carolina) offer 24/7 self-service for routine permits. For complex permits, after-hours availability is rare.

Same-day vs next-day pricing: some states surcharge expedited processing. Texas, for example, charges a flat fee for normal processing and adds a service fee for same-day issuance during off-peak hours. FastPermit absorbs these state-side surcharges into a flat per-permit service fee.
