How do I get a multi-state trip permit?
There is no single multi-state permit. The carrier files a separate trip permit in every state of travel — each issued by the state DOT, each with its own fee. A multi-state filing service (us) handles all of them in parallel during state DOT business hours, typically delivering all permits the same business day for a multi-state oversize or weight-distance move.
Each state independently issues its own permits. There is no FMCSA-equivalent for state-DOT permitting that lets a carrier file once for multiple states. Some regional reciprocity exists (Western States Permitting program for certain Western corridors) but the default is per-state filing.
For a typical 5-state oversize move, the carrier (or service) files 5 applications in parallel — one per state. Each state's DOT runs its own review, sets its own fee, and issues its own permit. The carrier carries all 5 permit PDFs in the truck (or has them accessible electronically) for roadside inspection.
The time to obtain all permits is governed by the slowest state. Most states issue routine oversize permits within 1-3 hours during business hours, so a 5-state move typically has all permits in hand within 4-6 hours. Superload moves with engineering review can take 5-15 days.
Filing services consolidate the multi-state coordination — same data submitted to each state, single carrier-facing dashboard for permit status, consolidated billing. Carriers running occasional multi-state moves benefit most from this consolidation; carriers with established in-house permit teams sometimes file directly.
